Seeing through the ears of a synesthete

This book uses the transcript from the TEDMED talk by Kaitlyn Hova, Seeing song through the ears of a synesthete. In this talk, Kaitlyn talks about how she is a synesthete and sees the world differently from others. Synesthesia is a condition where two senses are inherently crossed, activating each other simultaneously. In some cases, like Kaitlyn, she sees letters and sounds in color. She goes into how she uses her synesthesia to learn songs and performs a light show that shows the colors she sees when she plays the violin.

For this book design, I wanted to focus on seeing the world differently rather than the literal condition of synesthesia. Two colors are used within the book, blue and gold. These represent the colors of the dresses she mentions at the beginning of the book. The colors of the thread binding the book represent the colors that she sees when she plays the notes of the violin. The pages of this book are slightly transparent, which leads to seeing something differently. When you usually read a book, you don't see the next page, which leads to a sense of anticipation. What if you could see the next page? What if you had a sense of what was going to happen? These are questions I asked myself when designing this book. The rest is up to the reader's interpretation. How would you read this book? The regular left to right? Maybe starting from the middle and going outwards? These are the questions I want the reader to ask when reading this not-so-normal book.
